This scholarship is sponsored by a member of STAAR
Leaders and is dedicated in memory of his father, Wilbert L. Knight. Mr. Knight was born in Montgomery,
Alabama and passed away in January 2011 after living an enriched life in
Rochester, NY.
Mr. Knight was
an Air Force veteran who was a dedicated employee of RG&E. He was also an entrepreneur. He created a personal fleet of
taxi cabs that worked in the Rochester community and at the Rochester
International Airport. Mr. Knight
also created the “High Hat Lounge,” a bar and dance club. For almost 30 years, the High Hat
Lounge was a social landmark and business anchor to West Main Street and the
Susan B. Anthony Preservation District.
Mr. Knight’s gregarious spirit enriched all those
who knew him. He befriended
most of whom he met. He was an adored
son, brother, father, and grandfather.
He leaves behind a large group of family and friends. He is missed by all who knew him.
Mr. Knight was a member of several social and
fraternal organizations. He
was a member of Mt. Vernon Missionary Baptist Church. He was a Free Mason and member of the
B.O.E. Lodge in Rochester, NY.
Through these organizations, Mr. Knight supported many community service events
and organizations. Through his
personal hard work and community affiliations Wilbert L. Knight enriched his
family, friends, and community alike.
STAAR Leaders and the scholarship sponsor are proud
to dedicate this award in Mr. Knight’s memory to help to keep his legacy alive.
The Wilbert L. Knight Memorial Scholarship is
awarded to any college bound individual who has maintained a good academic
record in high school or college. The recipient of this award is expected to
have some community service experience.
